German Bundestag approves Bill allowing for possible expropriation of energy companies

On 12 May 2022, the German Bundestag (Lower House of Parliament) approved a bill that provides for the expropriation of critical energy infrastructure and assets in the event of an emergency. The controversial amendment – which is expected to come into effect in June – is aimed at reducing dependence on Russian energy and securing energy supply in response to the war in Ukraine.
